“HOW” IS IMPORTANT TOO
Activities that become habitual in the sense that they are no longer consciously chosen or undertaken
with a goal in mind to improve wellbeing, seem to have less effect than activities that remain fresh.
It is likely that some ways of undertaking activities eventually incorporate them into the wellbeing
setpoint. Activities that involve some variety seem to have a bigger effect. For example, studies have
shown that practicing acts of kindness and gratitude had a larger effect on wellbeing when completed
once a week compared to three times.36
