Task 3
Task 4
Adjusting to the new environment
of climate disruption
Re-investing emotional energy
In task 3, Worden describes the process of
adjus琀椀ng to a new environment. When we
experience loss, we need to adapt to a dras琀椀c
and profound change. Task 3 requires us to
iden琀椀fy new aspects of ourselves, and to
iden琀椀fy new behaviours, aligned with both our
values and what the world needs.
Ways to engage in Task 3:
• Re昀氀ect on your ecological values. What
ma琀琀ers most to you? How does this align
with your daily ac琀椀vi琀椀es and the way that
you interact with the natural world?
• Acquire new skills. In what ways do you feel
unprepared for the climate crisis? What do
you need to develop or work on?
• Iden琀椀fy ways to reduce your carbon
footprint. Be kind to yourself and do what
you can. This is about aligning your ac琀椀ons
with your values, not carrying the weight of
saving the world.
In Task 4, Worden describes a process of
昀椀nding an enduring connec琀椀on with what has
been lost, while also embarking on a new life.
In task 4, we re-invest our emo琀椀onal energy
from what we have lost, to what we must do
next. This may be climate ac琀椀vism, becoming a
climate leader in the community or workplace,
or a quiet modi昀椀ca琀椀on of life ac琀椀vi琀椀es. Task
4 is not prescrip琀椀ve, there is no “right” or
“wrong” approach. It requires us to do what we
feel is right for ourselves, our families, and our
community. We need to be mindful that this will
raise many challenges; feelings of entrapment,
con昀氀ict with family and friends, overwhelm with
where to start, and what to do. Support is vital.
Ways to engage in Task 4:
• What are your unique skills and strengths?
How can you use them to create purposeful
ac琀椀on?
• Iden琀椀fy local ac琀椀on groups. Is there a way
that you can support or engage with them?
• What informa琀椀on can you share with others?
How might you incorporate the topic of
climate change into daily conversa琀椀ons?
• Gather informa琀椀on and resources to
help you 昀椀nd ways to make change. The
Australian Psychological Society (APS)
Climate Empowerment Handbook has
useful informa琀椀on and prac琀椀cal steps to talk
about climate change with others and take
meaningful ac琀椀on.
