Climate scientist and Nobel Peace Prize winner
Steve Running has adapted the Kubler-Ross
model of grief to help understand climate loss:
Denial
Anger
Bargaining
A feeling of disbelief and a
desperate need to believe
that it’s not true. The
same sense of confusion,
disorienta琀椀on, that life has
been turned upside down.
Rage and Fury at the feeling
of being trapped- wan琀椀ng
to do things di昀昀erently, but
being trapped within this
capitalist, consumer driven
world. Anger at the people
and ins琀椀tu琀椀ons who have the
power to make change but
turn away. Or for those s琀椀ll in
denial, anger at people who
speak the truth about climate
change.
Pleading, begging, hoping
desperately that we are
wrong, that things aren’t as
bad as they seem, that it’s not
too late. Looking for posi琀椀ve
informa琀椀on about climate
change.
Depression
Acceptance
Despair, heartache,
powerlessness, and loss.
Hopelessness, helplessness,
and paralysis. A sense that
all is lost, and that change is
impossible.
Acceptance of facts and
an orienta琀椀on to solu琀椀ons.
An understanding that
what we have lost will
not come back, and many
future losses are beyond
our control. Empowerment
through knowledge and
understanding, and ac琀椀ve
hope. Purpose, meaning and
change.
