THE TRUTH: Dental researchers have
found mountains of evidence to show
how oral health a昀昀ects the rest of your
body, par琀椀cularly in rela琀椀on to diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s,
stroke, asthma and low birthweight
babies where gum disease is not only a
risk factor for these condi琀椀ons, but also
a factor in causing these condi琀椀ons.
For example, research has shown that
people with untreated gum disease
(also known as periodon琀椀琀椀s) have a
2.5 琀椀mes increased risk of having a
heart a琀琀ack compared to the same
group of people without untreated
gum disease. What they have yet
to determine is if the preven琀椀on or
treatment of gum disease reduces the
number of heart a琀琀acks.
