Allow yourself to fail
A habit is hard to form and, sometimes,
you’re not going to achieve the task
you’ve set yourself on any given day.
It’s important in these moments to
know that it’s okay to fail. So, don't let
the occasional missed exercise class
or Friday donut throw you off course.
Most people slip up in the first month,
but it’s those who continue to persist
with their goal that are the most
successful. If you do slip up, focus on
getting back on track, not the slip up.
Make it easier on yourself
Don’t set yourself up to fail. If your
resolution is to spend less time on your
phone before bed, don’t bring it into
bed with you. Set your alarm and put it
out of reach. Annoyed that your alarm
now goes off on the other side of the
room? Then get yourself an alarm
clock — they don’t cost much
nowadays!
Don’t be afraid to change it
up
Doing something for 365 days is tough,
so why not try micro-resolutions this
year? Separate the year into
segments, whether that’s individual
months or quarters and pick a series of
different goals that can fill these new
timescales. For example, maybe the
first month could be drinking less
alcohol, while the second could be
cutting out sweets and so on. You may
find that one of the micro-resolutions
becomes a fully-fledged habit that lasts
for years to come.
