Hydrotherapy offers signi昀椀cant advantages over traditional exercise physiology
treatments, including:
1.
BUOYANCY
The natural buoyancy of water comfortably supports
your weight, reducing stress on joints. Exercises and
treatments are easier, more comfortable, and safer
when performed in water.
Warm water eliminates the effects of gravity,
enabling a much greater variety of exercises and
movements that may not be possible on land. This
is especially bene昀椀cial for individuals with arthritis,
joint pain, or those unable to tolerate high-impact
exercises like jumping.
2.
VISCOSITY
Water resistance is ideal for muscle strengthening.
For those unable to perform standard land-based resistance exercises or lift weights, hydrotherapy
utilises tools such as resistance gloves, aquatic dumbbells, small pool noodles, hand paddles,
weighted leg straps, rings, and fabric resistance bands to build strength effectively.
3.
HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE
Water naturally supports muscle tissue and bones, helping to relieve swelling in damaged or sore
areas. It also improves joint position awareness, which is bene昀椀cial in rehabilitation therapies.
4.
WARMTH
Warm water is not just soothing; it also relaxes muscle tissue and widens (vasodilates) blood vessels,
allowing increased blood 昀氀ow and more ef昀椀cient healing of injuries.
Additionally, warm water can decrease swelling and in昀氀ammation while improving circulation.
