HAVING
A CONVERSATION
Some琀椀mes it can be hard to know how to check in with an individual.
It is important, however, to ini琀椀ate a conversa琀椀on to let them know
you are concerned and want to o昀昀er support. The aim of speaking
with your team member is to understand what is happening for them,
express your concern, acknowledge their experience and work with
them to 昀椀nd op琀椀ons for solu琀椀ons and support.
If you are wan琀椀ng to have a conversa琀椀on with a
team member, it is some琀椀mes helpful to:

Rehearse what you are going to say before
having the conversa琀椀on. Prepare a script
in your mind and open the conversa琀椀on by
saying something like; “I have no琀椀ced you
haven’t been yourself and I’m concerned
about you, would you like to talk about
it?” or “I no琀椀ced you have been o昀昀 work
recently, I’m concerned about you, would
you like to talk about anything that’s been
happening?”

Make sure you 昀椀nd a private and safe space
to have the conversa琀椀on.
•
Choose a 琀椀me during the day when the
person is available to talk – avoid 琀椀mes
before important mee琀椀ngs or events.

Respect the person’s answer. If they don’t
wish to speak right away, say something
like; “That’s okay, perhaps I can check-in
with you another 琀椀me?” or “Now might not
be the right 琀椀me, please know I’m here if
you want to talk about anything.”

If the person discloses a personal issue,
remember to listen. Come from a place
of wondering about their situa琀椀on, rather
than aiming to 昀椀x or solve a problem. O昀昀er
support and solu琀椀ons and let the person
decide if your sugges琀椀ons are right for
them. For example, o昀昀er sugges琀椀ons at
appropriate 琀椀mes like; “What support do
you have?”, “Maybe I could help link you in
with our EAP?” or “How can I be of most
support to you during this 琀椀me?”
