HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The origins of Na琀椀onal Sorry Day are deeply
rooted in Australia's colonial history, which
saw the forced removal of Indigenous children
from their families.
These children, known as the Stolen
Genera琀椀ons, were subjected to assimila琀椀on
policies from the late 1800s un琀椀l the 1970s.
The aim was to integrate them into white
society, o昀琀en resul琀椀ng in loss of cultural
iden琀椀ty, disconnec琀椀on from family, and
numerous abuses.
The Bringing Them Home report, released on
May 26, 1997, by the Human Rights and Equal
Opportunity Commission (now known as the
Australian Human Rights Commission), brought
widespread a琀琀en琀椀on to the plight of the Stolen
Genera琀椀ons. It documented tes琀椀monies of
separa琀椀on, loss, and trauma, recommending
that a formal apology be made and repara琀椀ons
provided to those a昀昀ected.
