Recent Australian data highlights the ongoing challenge of addressing
family and domestic violence:
In 2022, there was a notable increase in family
and domes琀椀c violence (FDV) related homicides,
with 135 vic琀椀ms recorded na琀椀onally. This
represents a 27% increase from the previous
year, and more than a third of all recorded
homicides were FDV related. The majority of
these homicide vic琀椀ms were female.
An es琀椀mated 8 million people aged 18 years
and over have experienced violence since the
age of 15, with a distribu琀椀on of 43% men and
39% women experiencing such violence.
Globally, estimates published by
the World Health Organization
(WHO) indicate that:
About 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have
been subjected to either physical and/or sexual
in琀椀mate partner violence or non-partner sexual
violence in their life琀椀me.
Most of this violence is in琀椀mate partner
violence. Worldwide, almost one third (27%)
of women aged 15-49 years who have been
in a rela琀椀onship report that they have been
subjected to some form of physical and/or
sexual violence by their in琀椀mate partner.
81,000 women and girls were killed in 2020,
around 47,000 of them (58%) died at the hands
of an in琀椀mate partner or a family member. This
is an average of one death every 11 minutes.
