THE EXTENT
OF THE ISSUE
Family, domestic, and
sexual violence in Australia
are pervasive issues that cut
across age, background, and
socio-economic status.
However, they
disproportionately affect
women and children.
Recent sta琀椀s琀椀cs paint a stark picture of the
situa琀椀on:
Approximately 1 in 6 women aged
18 years and over have experienced
violence by a partner since the age
of 15.
Young women (18–24 years) experience
notably higher rates of physical and sexual
violence compared to women in older age
groups. An es琀椀mated 1 in 4 women have
experienced violence by an in琀椀mate partner
since the age of 15.
On average, one woman a week is
murdered by her current or former
partner,
making in琀椀mate partner violence the most
signi昀椀cant health risk for women aged 25-44.
The impact of this violence is far-reaching, with
domes琀椀c or family violence against women
being the single largest driver of homelessness
for women, a common factor in child protec琀椀on
no琀椀昀椀ca琀椀ons, and resul琀椀ng in a police call-out
on average once every two minutes across the
country.
Over two-thirds of mothers who had children
in their care when they experienced violence
from their previous partner reported that their
children had seen or heard the violence.
