Planning for a
100year
life
BY CON BARBAYANNIS, CPA
Longer lives are
changing the way
we think about work,
retirement and 昀椀nancial
security. Preparing
early can help ensure
that additional years
bring greater choice,
independence and
opportunity.
Living to 100 may
once have seemed
exceptional, but longer
lifespans are reshaping
expectations around
the world. Global life
expectancy reached
73.3 years in 2024, an
increase of more than
eight years since 1995,
and is projected to rise
further. By 2050, around
one in six people globally
is expected to be aged
65 or older.
This does not mean
everyone will live for a
century. It does mean
many people may
spend considerably
longer in later life than
previous generations.
A retirement lasting 25,
30 or even 40 years is
becoming a realistic
possibility, making
longevity an important
part of 昀椀nancial planning
at every age.
