CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME AND SLEEP:
More Than Simply
Feeling Tired
BY SLEEP HEALTH FOUNDATION
We all know what it feels
like to be tired after a
long day or a poor night’s
sleep. But Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome (CFS) is
something very different.
People with CFS
experience intense fatigue
and exhaustion that
do not simply go away.
Physical or mental activity
can make symptoms worse,
and recovery may require
much more rest than usual.
The impact can extend
across everyday life,
affecting both physical
activities, such as
going for a walk, and
mental tasks, such as
concentrating at work.
CFS is not simply
about feeling
sleepy. It is an
ongoing sense
of fatigue and
exhaustion that can
affect everyday
functioning.
Fatigue and sleepiness
are not the same
One of the key
distinctions with CFS is
the difference between
fatigue and sleepiness.
People with CFS
generally experience
fatigue rather than
feeling as though they
could fall asleep at any
moment. Excessive
daytime sleepiness
can be associated with
different issues and is not
the same as CFS.
