Global Perspective:
• Mortality: Smoking is responsible for over 8 million deaths annually worldwide, with more than
7 million resul琀椀ng from direct tobacco use and around 1.3 million from exposure to second-hand
smoke.
• Health Risks: Smoking is a leading cause of various cancers, respiratory diseases like chronic obstruc琀椀ve
pulmonary disease (COPD), and cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke.
Australian Context:
• Mortality: In Australia, smoking remains a signi昀椀cant health issue, contribu琀椀ng to approximately
7.6% of the total disease burden.
• Smoking Rates: The propor琀椀on of Australians aged 14 and over who smoke daily has decreased
from 24% in 1991 to 8.3% in 2022–2023.
