Why Hydration Is Important
Statistically, water is the most significant
source of hydration and is vital for our overall
health. More than half of our body is water,
and it’s a fluid we all need to survive.
According to the University of Queensland
School of Public Health, our blood plasma,
which is responsible for transporting
nutrients, energy and oxygen throughout the
body, comprises 90% water.
Additionally, water provides inner waste
filtration and keeps our bodies functioning
via joint lubrication and temperature control.
Water also underscores our digestive health.
One of the simplest ways to get water is
through the humble tap, which, in Australia,
is a quality water source that is safe to
consume. If you’re concerned about the
quality of your water, you can contact your
water provider to get their quality test
results.
What Happens If We Don’t Stay
Hydrated?
Seeing as hydration is a vital component for
maintaining our bodies peak performance,
you may wonder what happens if you stray
from drinking enough healthy beverages:
Water helps maintain your body's
temperature, so without water, your body
may not be able to regulate itself, and
your heart rate may rise.
Staying hydrated also helps us focus and
feel more alert, so if you’re feeling
dehydrated, you may feel unusually tired.
Our brains also need to stay hydrated, so
if you’re not drinking enough, your mental
clarity may be cloudier, and your ability
to make decisions and concentrate could
be adversely affected.
When exercising or playing sports, you
may not be able to perform as well as you
usually would.
