Snack Ideas
BY SAMANTHA STUK, ACCREDITED PRACTISING DIETITIAN
A trip to the movies o昀琀en
looks like this: you buy your
琀椀cket, grab a large popcorn
and drink combo (because
why not?), maybe throw in
a choc top or a bag of lollies
(it’s the weekend, a昀琀er all!).
But by the 琀椀me the credits
roll, you barely remember
ea琀椀ng it all. Sound familiar?
Over 琀椀me, we’ve hardwired
movie-watching with
snacking—thanks, in part,
to all those adver琀椀sements
showing people happily
munching away in front of
the screen. Even at home,
we’ve picked up the habit of
reaching for sugary, processed
snacks during movie nights.
Now, there’s absolutely nothing
wrong with indulging in a treat
at the cinema. But if movie
nights are a regular thing, all
those empty calories can start
adding up. And you might be
surprised at just how energydense some of these foods are.
A large box of popcorn may
feel light, but it packs around
400 calories—roughly the same
as a main meal.
Plus, when you’re ea琀椀ng
while distracted, it’s hard to
truly enjoy the 昀氀avours or
recognise when you’re full.
So, if you love a good bingewatch session at home, here
are some healthier snack
alterna琀椀ves that let you
enjoy your treats without
overdoing it.
