WORK
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AT WORK
Improving Mental
Health and
Productivity
BY USH DHANAK
With many of us spending
a signi昀椀cant por琀椀on of
our lives at work, the
workplace environment
can greatly in昀氀uence
our mental health and
wellbeing. According to the
World Health Organisa琀椀on
(WHO), poor workplace
condi琀椀ons—including high
demands, low control, and
lack of support—are major
contributors to mental
health challenges. WHO
es琀椀mates that mental
health condi琀椀ons, including
depression and anxiety,
lead to a loss of 12 billion
working days annually,
cos琀椀ng the global economy
nearly USD 1 trillion in
produc琀椀vity losses.
A workplace characterised
by low collec琀椀ve emo琀椀onal
intelligence (EQ) can o昀琀en
create a toxic environment.
In contrast, a workplace
with high EQ fosters a
posi琀椀ve, produc琀椀ve, and
suppor琀椀ve culture that
can improve mental
health and enhance
overall performance.
