Useful Tips
• Encourage Regular Fluid Intake: Ensure your
child drinks plenty of 昀氀uids spread evenly
throughout the day. Limi琀椀ng 昀氀uids in an
a琀琀empt to prevent bedwe琀ng is not e昀昀ec琀椀ve
and may even be counterproduc琀椀ve.
• Avoid Ca昀昀eine: Do not give drinks containing
ca昀昀eine (e.g., co昀昀ee, hot chocolate, or cola)
late in the evening.
• Nightwear: Having your child wear a pyjama
top or nightdress without bo琀琀oms can make
the alarm sound sooner if they start to wet
the bed.
What can I do for overnight stays,
such as school camps?
Medica琀椀on can be helpful for short overnight
stays. DDAVP (Desmopressin) is a synthe琀椀c
form of ADH that helps reduce urine produc琀椀on
overnight. It is available in tablet, nasal spray,
and wafer forms.
DDAVP is safe as long as you follow
these guidelines:
1. Stay within the prescribed dose.
2. Limit 昀氀uid intake in the evening a昀琀er dinner.
DDAVP can act quickly, and some children may
have dry nights from the start. Many doctors
recommend using DDAVP for three months
and then gradually reducing the dose to see if
the child remains dry without it. If bedwe琀ng
resumes a昀琀er stopping the medica琀椀on, your
doctor may suggest resuming it.
