Looking for the
easy 昀椀x
Understandably we seek a diagnosis hoping
that the normal daily drudgery of life can be
“昀椀xed” with a pill or diagnosis - that suddenly
can explain our own, unique experience.
We hunt for a 昀椀x, and the more black and
white the conclusion, the easier it feels to 昀椀x.
If only we could swallow a tablet rather than
the much harder work to correct, cajole,
mould and address the messy greyness of
the human condi琀椀on.
As a consequence, it can seem that within the
space of roughly ten years, our expecta琀椀ons
in life have changed. Rather than come to a
degree of acceptance about the complexity and
entanglement of personality traits, apprecia琀椀on
of the importance of history, precedents
and pa琀椀ence; understand learning occurs
incrementally, steadily and experien琀椀ally, there
has been a drama琀椀c shi昀琀 in expecta琀椀on to
favour neat and 琀椀dy parameters, complexity
being collapsed into reduc琀椀onist memes, and
quick 昀椀xes that render the inexplicable to
instantly transform to the explicable.
For many diagnosis can be life changing;
but for so many others, the promise of a
‘昀椀x’ doesn’t eventuate and the associated
disappointment or ‘let down’ can lead to a
vicious cycle of emo琀椀on that can be hard
to exit from. Worse, it can lead to no change
and stagna琀椀on reinforcing the original
malaise and self-ful昀椀lling reality.
