Excessive salt consumption is associated with several health issues, including:

People who are overweight appear particularly sensitive to
the effects of salt on blood pressure, which correlates strongly
with heart disease.
A lower-salt diet can help reduce blood
pressure and lower the risk of heart
disease in both healthy individuals
and those with hypertension. For
this reason, the Australian Dietary
Guidelines recommend choosing foods
low in salt and avoiding adding salt
during cooking or at the table.
