WHAT CAUSES
CANCER?
WE
do not know all the risks and causes of cancer. However, there are a
number of chemical, physical and biological agents that have been shown to
trigger the mistakes in the cell blueprint that cause cancer. These are called
carcinogens; and include tobacco, ultraviolet (UV) radiation and asbestos.
Several cancers share risk factors:
Smoking causes one in 昀椀ve cancer deaths.
Alcohol use contributes to the burden of eight different types of cancer.
Dietary in昀氀uences are a causal factor for many cancers
Infectious agents or exposure to radiation can cause cancer
(especially skin cancers from UV radiation).
Genetic factors can cause some cancers.
